First round picks get 2 year guarenteed contracts, with options for both the 3rd and 4th years. After the 3rd season teams can then sign them to long term extensions which is what happened with Howard and with Lebron, Wade, Melo, & Bosh last year.

The Bulls agreed to a two-year contract with free-agent forward Joe Smith, the Sun-Times has learned.
Smith was thought to be the Bulls' No. 1 priority among the available free agents.
Smith, who was the No. 1 overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 1995 draft, averaged 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds in 54 games last season with the Philadelphia 76ers. While the 76ers could have offered Smith more money, the Bulls likely sold him on the fact that they are a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference.

Great signing by the Bucks. If they can now fix the Yi fiasco then things are looking good.

Magliore signs with the Nets after Mikki Moore decided to sign with Sacramento.
Chucky Atkins signs with Denver. $6.6 over two years.
Stevenson and the Zards come to an agreement. 4 years at $3.75 mill a year. Good buy...
The NBA has come out and suspended Stephen Jackson and Ron Artest for 7 games due to their recent criminal behaviour. Suspension to begin at the beginning of the season.
The Hornets are letting Mason walk after signing Mo Pete. The Bucks are interested in Mason.
Jason Hart has reached an agreement with Utah.
Scola could possibly play for Houston this year after reaching a basic agreement of $9.3 mill over 3 years. Scola will get a front end contracted as he has to pay his old team $3.2 mill to play with Houston.
Houston is trying to ship Lucas III as they have too many guards.
