Funny Goorjian named NBL Coach of the Year

After leading the Sydney Kings to an amazing season in which they lost only three games, Sydney Kings guru Brian Goorjian has won the National Basketball League's Lindsay Gaze Trophy for Coach of the Year of the 2007/08 HUMMER Championship season.

Goorjian was a clear winner of the prestigious award, earning 89 votes to finish well ahead of Gold Coast mentor Brendan Joyce (25) and Alan Westover of Melbourne (24). It is yet another honour in what has already been an unbelievable career for Goorjian, who has won more games than any other coach in NBL history.

...

Sydney's winning percentage of .900 was the second-best in NBL history behind only the legendary Adelaide 36ers 'Invincibles' team of 1986, who went 24-2 (.917).

I definetely agree with a comment made in a previous post about the lack excitment with these announcements.

Could the NBL have not made a bit of a bigger deal of this week and done something a bit flashier with these awards?

In conjuction with Grand Final week they could have promoted that they would be announcing each of the awards during the week.

Monday - Most improved
Tuesday - Rookie of the Year
Wednesday - Best 6th Man
Thursday - All NBL team & Coach of the Year
Friday - MVP

With the award to be given out at Game 3 of the Grand Final prior to the game.

Skip, yep, definitely agree. Make the announcement dates well known via their site and various forums. Build up to it with some profiles of contenders with a few comments from various pundits.

How hard is it to even change the NBL poll each day for the next award to be announced to see how the public think?

The admin of the League and the website have really taken a step back this year.

Even just making the little extra effort of flying any winners not participating in the GF into the city of whichever game and giving them a little presentation at half time. Gives them their little moment in the spotlight, plus promotes them a little to whoever watching on Fox. Do Defensive/Improved/6th man at Game 1, Coach Game 2, MVP & announce All-NBL teams at Game 3. The way they do it now, who the hell knows or cares? You have to be on one of these message boards or randomly checking in on the NBL website to find out. The hardcore fan of a club will find out if one of their guys won something, but it promotes nothing to the general public, tells no-one. It's one step away from doing nothing, just sending a letter of congratulations to the player and leaving it up to him to tell his mates and them to tell their mates, and their mates to tell....

Any particular year you think Voldermort should have got it though?

98 Magic were the dominant force.

99 Probably should have gone close (did he poll well?) but still well deserved to gaze, questionable about Joyce(?)

2001 Season was nothing special - Farley was something special!

Much deserved after an amazing season. Only 3 losses. I still get a chuckle though when I think about the worst loss this season they have had.

Well done, Gorj.
Think I might go and watch that game again, EC.
Aw, and sixers 86 record.
History became a lie, when two games were 'lost' due to time clock errors.
