my lightning blog...
well some thoughts after 2 rounds...
first game v sydney - well we did our best to lose after cruising. poto playing with a calf tear and it will catch up with her - she is in form but playing 38+ mins a game will tell. expect more from the sydney imports once they settle. Lorenzini showed what she can always do and it is a pity after 2 years of development she was not still here - great last 1/4. still always good to win over there.
second game v bendigo - we played average and still trounced them - although harrower will be worth 20 ppg to them.
game style - unless we quicken our defensive transition - we will struggle - way too slow getting back on turn overs - Bendigo exposed that.
our offence is running at 70% - not smooth enough for me yet - remember last year it was as bad early til they settled.
we have the boards covered - i think we are still a quality shooting / point guard short - hope marino and foley dont get injured as they will clock up big minutes. they can do the job - but another good guard is needed.
I would like to think mia will take the next step - i know she can.
players -
foley - filled in erin's spot as the "x" factor - the opals await her - however she will be doubled / tripled with 2 great performances so far.
marino - in form shooting well - sometimes our offence has been left to her to throw something up. drew the fouls off bendigo well with her drives.
francis - had a night off v bendigo - a metre off the pace a gabe richards too strong - however we know she can deliver big numbers
gahan - usual self and will be a key player over the season
payne - v bendigo showed why she is a renown shot blocker, has a nice mid range shot - she will bring her arms down to foul and i would like to see quicker feet in D
sam - as per gahan
newley - has game and i would expect some better numbers over the season - handling the ball well - needs to finish - big chance for her to step up
bowley - fitted in well, few boards - but needs to finish - her experience will be valuable
duke - personal best return so far v bendigo i believe - looks her fittest yet and she may have a break out season.
(god only knows about that turn over mid court LOL)
williams - shot a nice 3 to start v sydney but seemed off the pace v bendigo - fumbled a bit when carrying teh ball and looked hestiant against a trap - but she passed the ball nicely down the court on the fast break.
my thoughts - definitely top 3 - could win it again if we go game on.
i expect sydney and caps to deliver and bulleen big improvers.
we have the fire power for big scores and the height to match canberra.
areas of concern - looked sus in the backcourt when bendigo ran a trap.
too slow into defence in transition.
too slow moving the ball forward on the fast break.
half court offence a bit laggy - however we were spoilt with camino, phillips and foley last year around the arc.
strengths - inside / outside shooters, experience and the girls look very fit.
our half court defence also looks good.
great start to the season girls - go the bakers' delight floor wipers and great to hear some Doof doof from the new system.
thanks to the u14 club champs girls for coming - one day we will going to watch some of them in the wnbl!' teams - good to acknowledge them at half time.
