NBL now on SBS main channel?

Just noticed today's new Zealand vs Illawarra game is on the main SBS channel. Is this a new thing?

First time. NZB-ILL is on both SBS and SBS Viceland - no idea why. CNS-ADL afterwards only on Viceland.

Noticed it too.

Filler, or experiment perhaps?

Shane Heal vs. LaVar Ball at half time. Maybe that's why.

It's just an interview. They talked it up as if it was going to be a one on one.

Ad for next week's ADL-NZB game on SBS after the game, odd they don't advertise the CNS-ADL game right now on another one of their channels.

Why is it such a thing whether it's on the main channel or not? Select "30" or "31" from the EPG, or type "30" or "31" on your remote, or press "channel up" or "channel down". Same difference?

Or are a significant number of people locked into each network's main channel and ignore the alternate chanels?

They were last I heard, which was why getting that game on Ten was such a big deal during the One HD days. How much that applies to SBS as compared to 7/9/10, or how much it still applies in 2019, I don't know.

I'd venture that having a themed alternate channel (flix, Food) probably attracts more eyeballs than a "whatever isn't on the main channel" type of thing (Go, Gem), because people at least know to seek it out for a certain type of content. I couldn't even name most FTA channels these days.

It's about catching the channel surfers, not about getting games to NBL fans.

Agree with KR.

The main channels out-rate the secondary channels by a long way.

People kind of expect the secondary channels to be full of re-runs. 7Mate is a bit of an exception, as they have a lot of niche shows PLUS they switch sports to it during news time and use it for AFL in the non-AFL states (apart from Sydney/GWS in NSW, and some Brisbane games in a Qld).

Vineland seems to be a lot of cocos, repeats and more "edgy" programming. It looks like it's SBS making a play for younger audiences, hence basketball there.

72/ 62 seems to be aiming for an older niche market, as does 92/ 82 (Gem) ie antiques and old pommy crime shows.

I’m not even sure about the 10 network, it seems like chaotic programming.

As a point of difference to 7 (families) and 9 (oldies) Channel 10 has always gone after the younger demographic. 10 Boss is geared towards young men and 10 Peach is geared towards young women.

I have to admit I was very sceptical of the decision to re-brand SBS2 as SBS Viceland but they've stuck with it going hard with the youthful 'edgier' programming and have given the NBL the biggest TV profile it's ever had with live games on weekends and replays throughout the week.

Responses above could explain it. Maybe I don't see it as an issue as I scroll through the EPG to see what's on (when I do watch FTA). Haven't relied on a a paper tv guide or, with the catch-up streaming, been locked in to watching shows at a particular time. Long gone are the days of setting my VCR to record!
