TBD guard
Elliot in for Sherrington

Mapp
Johnson
Manyok or Clague

-Couple of other bigs with a shot over those at COE. Ilic, Trout etc

Agree with Weedy. Team won't change much if at all looking at that list. Last team mostly did enough to get another go.

You have to shake your head about some selection tho. It isn’t based on performances from what I have seen. If selected you get a return for free ticket in some cases and it looks harder to get out than in.

BTW glad Herbert is leaving CoE. I had high hopes for him when he started and then he wouldn’t leave the golden triangle of ACT/VIC/NSW and development of many dropped of.

Change in nt coaches would be my next move. Introduce a merit based process might be a start and positive change. Some transparency is needed. Far too many better ones are overlooked. Next one will no doubt be a PL buddy.

Other than that all good!

What is going on here with selections?
3 bottom agers from nsw sets the tone. A couple of bottom agers overlooked in my opinion - vic metro Jones is an outstanding player and sa metro Gribben looks also to be the goods - both will dominate in my opinion at AJC U16. I've followed Gribben from a far - not from sa but for me was a stand out at ecc and easily beat two named underaged nsw players in the game I saw - works hard both ends. See she has been selected as a bottom aged u16 all Australian afl player . Don’t follow afl so can’t make comment on this.
Some COE girls not invited to the camp- and some not in AJC U18 vic teams invited what’s going on here? Some not tested at the highest level seems off.
Absolutely agree qld and vic should dominate this squad with excellent players and how they have finished at AJC u16 2024 and u18 2025. SA hp must be pretty ticked off with this selection when they finished 2nd at AJC 18s 2025 and 3rd at AJC 16s 2024 and only have one selected- Elliot. Also think her name is Hardin was also very good at both tournaments.
Do we know when the team will be selected as is it promoted on social media as a "training camp" not a selection camp?
Like the name says just a dad don’t know a lot but have seen a lot and appreciate emerging talent
And I disagree @Massive a few talls, forwards and to somewhat guards were not utilised in clutch games think there will or should be changes

Genuinely curious how are these selections are picked... does it go off rep stats, who you know, if their parents were somebodies…?

Interesting fakalata being picked when she's been kicked out of the Victorian hp program for numerous off court behaviour… no doubt she’s talented but not sure how this is allowed… she must be a shoe in for the team.

I also think Jones deserves a run in the squad.

Definitely think vic and qld will be dominate but think Elliott should be in … Hardin should also get a run in the squad.

Who to replace Herbert do we think?

I haven't seen the other countries rosters apart from NZ and the Phillipines.

Mapp was the C at oceania, backed up by Johnson, Clague and Manyok, 1 C too many imo.

If your squad is correct(which probably isn’t accurate) having only Trout as the other 6’2 big would be a mistake.

Minimum of 1 but preferably 2x 6’4+ in asia is needed, if they are mobile...
Mapp is a solid rebounder and a good defender and unfortunately 1 of the above Cs is out injured atm so Manyok would be a must imo.

Great to see the Crocs actually play some warm up/trail matches. At this point I wouldn't worry to much about results, they beat China in Game 3 without Will Hamilton.. and Antonio Browne looks really really good.

It seems Luke Paul is the injured player, he wasn't suited up for any of the games.

the 3 centres in
Y Basaran VIC 7'1
A Mabbott VIC 6'11
A Machar SA 7'2
look to be really good at this young age.

Add Jayden Cecil and if they can add/find a 6'9ish power forward who can shoot its looking like a really good team. Many more matches/tours leading up to the world cup and they could do something.

Its to bad the NBA global Academy closed and Basketball Australia didn't expand the COE intake to 18-20 to cover the loss having more players (with exposure to the US system) was clearly working, big big loss

A team like the following would be great..

Browne/Cecil/Watene
Hamilton/Paul
Aryang/Byrne
Jorgensen/??
Basaran/Mabbott/Machar

Not bad Boomboomer. Watching the YouTube clips our talls and inside game looked great, although not too many 3pt highlights.
On the team, I worry that we are be too inside heavy which may build too much shooting pressure on too few?
Given how well AB is playing, I don't think you need 3 x PG. Maybe Cecil to SG.
Would also shift Aryang to a PF and Hamilton to a SF which unlocks another shooting spot given our need.

PG - Browne + Dammers or Watene (one of)
SG - Cecil + Paul + ???
SF - Hamilton + Byrne
PF - Jorgensen + Aryang
C - Mabbott + Basaran + Machar

Keogh is a great talent. Strength to the basket his major asset, also picks up a high number of boards. AUS u16s have many players who excel in this area and would have been tough choosing between the likes of Jorgensen, Byrne, Hamilton, Keogh, Wilson, etc as can't have them all. Given the AUS depth, if a secondary option is available in NZ then why not seriously consider it. As Baseline indicates, the loss to AUS will be NZ's gain.

A win for both the Crocs and Sapphires is certainly achievable. No doubt there will be disappointment if either doesn't come home with the title.
Both China and NZ match up well against the Crocs so they will have to play well to win. There may be more of a gap between the Sapphires and the rest, although a push from Japan wouldn't surprise.

I think with injuries and maybe some odd selections the crocs may not be the favourites this time around but I still think top 4.
Outside of the 4 would be a disaster... but possible with a slip up in the 1/4s.
Browne and Hamilton will have to do alot of the heavy lifting.
Think Machar would have been way more effective in asia over edwards.

Sapphires favourites to win, easy top 3 imo. Japan/China the only threat to 4 in a row.
No Sherrington(inj), Tavete, Johnson(inj) or Clague.
In comes Fakalata, Catip, Seiz and Trout.
Think Catip and Seiz will have to play well to gain a spot in the WC team.
Trout also will have to play well if she wants a post spot.

Why do they need to play well more than anyone else Weedy? Who takes there place if they dont play well? Ashby now she's at CoE? Will Sherrington be available for the WC and which gurd drops out for her because she has to play if shes fit.

Can't see the Crocs being challenged in their pool.

Iran or Japan in the semis will be a bit more of a challenge.

A grand final against China or NZ will be competitive.

What happened to browne, like he's scared to shoot or something... passes it up everytime.

Crocs only up 6 up with 5min to go against Lebanon.

I'm not seeing much from NZ that'll worry Aus. Unless they keep allowing the four step travels they've been getting away with

Other teams move the ball alot better than us, China, Korea and Japan.

Think we will face Korea in the 1/4s, should be a tight contest(one we must win to qualify for the WC.)

Other 1/4 final matchups lookin like...

Japan v Lebanon
Nz v Iran
China v Bahrain or Chinese Taipei

And now it's down to ... one more win for the Gold, after embarrassing Japan last night.

Form suggests that it will be a comfortable win tonight

Having watch these kids in this tournament for the first time Luke Paul has been super impressive.

Athletic and skilled with a high IQ but nearly always team first options.

Paul has been sensational. One to watch for sure. Good size and reads the game very well. Was he originally expected to run the PG spot? Team certainly looked better with the ball in his hands.

Luke Paul is an absolute gun - so complete, amazing feel for the game, and makes the right reads almost all the time. Byrne has again done in this tournament what he's done for Vic Country and Ballarat for years, playing super solid, high IQ, fundamentally sound basketball. Was stoked to see Will Hamo drop a couple of triples, will be important for him going forward to be able to knock that down consistently. China were well drilled, and it took us a while to break them, but mission accomplished.

Paul is visibly taller than hamilton, so he's already 6’5.

Interested to see what changes they make before the WC.

Surely locks are
Dammers PG
Browne PG
Paul U
Byrne SF
Hamilton PF
Jorgenson PF
Mabbott C

Likely
Watene PG

Maybe
Pavey SG
Mcann SF
Edwards PF
Machar C

Yahya Basaran and maybe Jayden Cecil will be pushing for selection.

I'm not sure who else would be under consideration.

Given the WC is only 9 months away, I’d expect a pretty similar squad to be going.

Yup Basaran probably pushes out Machar.
Who does Cecil replace?
Aryang comes in.

Keogh would have also come in handy with a lack of SFs. He played ok for NZ.

Paul/Dammers/Watene
Browne/Cecil
Hamilton/Byrne
Jorgenson/Aryang
Mabbott/Basaran

The crocs were very impressive, looked a class above. How good was Paul's game in the final, certainly franks his COE offer.

I wouldn't be changing too much for the Worlds, maybe Machar who needs more time and Pavey who lacked opportunity the vulnerable ones.

Now on to the Sapphires for the U16 double!

Sapphires qualify for the WC. -Straight to the semis.
Easy group stage wins over Phillipines, South Korea and Chinese Taipei.
All playing well so far...

Lookin like another Australia vs Japan final.

Also
India win division B over Iran and get promoted to division A in 2027.
Syria likely to drop out of Division A.

You've got to wonder if being in Asia region is hurting Aussies performance in the various WCs

Very little competition for them which makes it hard to deliver against the top teams.

Good result for NZ who surprisingly are pretty weak in junior women at the moment.

2025 - 36pt win vs NZ
2023 - 6 pt win vs Japan
2022 - 1 pt win vs Japan
2017 - 1 pt win bs Japan

Dominating...

The only issue with asia is the height factor. Nz + china have teams sometimes that match. Most important thing is to get exp against bigger opponents in nbl1 or elsewhere prior to the WC.

Thought everyone played a part, will be tough team to break into the next year.
Nz were very good also, not expected. Lots of quality 2010s, a good core going forward for future events.

Imo, I'd assume

Locks
Fakalata PG
Hocking CG
Smith CG
Olechnowicz G/F
Richardson CF
Ryan CF
Trout PF/C

Yes/No, hard to tell… (+ others on the list)

Catip PG, other options Sherrington, Elliot, Jones
Moke SG, other options Tako, Bonham
Seiz SF, other options Tavete, Ashby, Shanahan
Mapp C + Manyok C, other options Johnson, Clague, Lukell

Core 6 is locked and good. But might be 3/4 changes to this team in the backup group from the bench. 2/3 guards for me at risk. Sherrington will come back in if recovered. Size and physical developments over next 6 months will play a part and we'll see 1/2 2010s pushing and not necessarily those you've listed. I think in all honesty some in this group have peaked. Not sure how some who cannot get in state team can be considered a better option.
