Sixers sign Zylan Cheatham

1 year deal. He will help with defense.

Those suggesting it would be Creek was a ridiculous suggestion. No way GK would bring him back

Trez and Cheatham together is fun

Cheatham is no stretch four, what is going on with this roster construction? He's virtually the same type of player as Trez.

Solid player but not sure about the fit. Not much of an outside threat, doesn't provide spacing on offense.

"He's virtually the same type of player as Trez." How? One is a power forward the other is a small forward

Club look like they couldn't afford Hurt so went with the next best option which is probably the better option

He was a PF with the Breakers with not much of an outside shot either.

Good signing IMO, should be a big upgrade on what Martin contributed last season

Gives us a roster of

Harrell/Humphries/Gristi
Cheatham/(Harrell plays a little PF)
Cameron/Harris
Vasiljevic/White
Cotton/Rassmussen

So they have sorta gone for guards who can shoot and athletic inside imports and a quality inside big in Humphries

Could work quite well, teams focus too much on Cotton and Vasiljevic on the outside you throw it in to Trez and Co on the inside

The defence focus's too much on the inside you have Cotton and DJV on the outside to punish them.

What's his defence like? Can he defend sort of 2-5 spots?

KET definitely a formidable defender, versatile, can guard multiple positions, athletic, amazing rebounder.

Definitely not a stretch 4, shot 25 percent from 3 last season in Japan. Not going to be a lot of room in the key again this season.

He can defend and rebound? That'll do me.

I can see Isaac getting squeezed out of the rotation, after the club said they were going to make him more of a focus they have basically recruited him off the court.

Forgot Kenyon on my depth chart

the roster is

Harrell/Humphries/Gristi
Cheatham/(Harrell/Kenyon plays a little PF)
Cameron/Kenyon
Vasiljevic/White/Harris
Cotton/Rassmussen

Add Kenyon to that team aswell which strengthens defence a bit more

I think there is 25 mins for Humphries

My guess for the minutes is something like

Harrell 15/Humphries 25
Cheatham 30/Harrell 10
Cameron 20/Kenyon 15/Harris 5
Vasiljevic 25/White 10/Harris 5
Cotton 30/Rassmussen 10

But either way you can play Humphires (and all 3 of the bigs and all 5 of the main players) 25-30 mins quite easily

thats 10 guys playing, if they just want to play 8 its probably Harris and Rassmussen that lose the minutes for more time for Cameron/Kenyon/White

I think this a smarter signing than Hurt. Ideally you want a defensive minded big who can shoot but you also can't have everything perfectly. And it's not like even Harrell can't shoot at all. He hit many timely 3s last season. Again, ideally it would be nice, but I don't think the NBL needs this by default in the same way as the NBA right now. Hard to fault this signing taking everything else into account. He was a pretty gritty defender?

Sounds like Adelaide have wrapped up their off-season? The balance ain't perfect, but it's hard to fault what they've done and how efficently they've done it.

Signing Cheatham covers that 4/5 hole a bit, but Adelaide really only have Cotton as a point guard. White isn't really a proper point guard which presents Rasmussen with a huge opportunity. Also Cameron (Who I keept forgetting about) could pinch in despite likely starting as a 3. This could be a real problem though.

Have said it before but it's also hard to fault the bench pieces of Harris, White and Kenyon. All bring something Adelaide need.

This is probably the biggest off-season from Adelaide ever? Pressure is on.

Bulldog, I think Adelaide have either been deceptive on purpose, or they've had an injection of funds from somewhere else that has drastically changed the narrative.

In reality, starting or not shouldn't matter or mean anything, but it obviously does at the same time. So it really is about how they come together. Any one of those 3 bigs could be effective as a starter or bench player.

I like the signing but I still can't see how Sixers fans can be satisfied with only 2 or 3 stud defenders, given that at least one of them is bound to be off at any time in order to give minutes to the others in the squad.

I think Sixers will be really vulnerable against a team that runs the ball up the court quickly - they may have some guys who can get back quickly, but I’m less confident in their ability to make the right defensive decisions at speed.

SixersFan - if you've watched him play or seen him in the flesh you'll know he isn't a small forward. But that's fine because they don't need a SF and they don't need another three point option. The roster needed an athletic big and he's an upgrade on martin and better fit than hurt i reckon.

He wouldn't have come cheap considering he was priced out of SEM last season so they settled for hurt.

This roster is looking pretty good although I can see cameron moving from SF as the season goes. It's not a natural fit for him and he's better handling the ball more. In fact DJV would be better at SF with cameron sharing guard duties IMO

I don't remember SEM chasing Cheatham but the Sixers chased him hard last year and settled for Martin once he signed in Japan, where he also played as a PF. Only averaged 12 and 7 there too.

Glad others are excited but Cheatham was like a lesser-Trez at the Breakers and IMO not what we need. With Trez and Humphries three bigs that can't stretch the floor with an unusable Griscti as the fourth big too and the spacing starts to become an issue again. It's a bit ironic but a healthy Martin is exactly what this team could've used.

Zylan played briefly with the Jazz in Mike Wells last season there too, so that's another connection you can make too.

Better fit than Hurt as others have said, very good team now if everyone keeps their egos in check and play team. It's a big if, but if they start rolling early they are clearly top four material, maybe higher. Their certainly is a huge wage bracket here, just in the three imports, I’m expecting a fair tax bill at season end.

Get Cotton naturalized quickly and grab another import.

Zodiac - mike kelly was vocal about wanting to sign him. Think I've got my seasons right?! It was at summer league.

When you've got DJV and cotton as well as cameron and Co firing away threes I'm not sure you need bigs that are a threat from the perimeter. If anything having inside threats will help space the floor more

If Perth could not get Cotton naturalised how do you expect Adelaide can get it done "quickly"?
