Aussies in the NBA

A great day for Aussie basketball and the NBL. Interested to see how many players get farmed out to NBL clubs. We are proving to be an excellent league for younger player development!

Landale is still a net positive player when he's on the floor. He does everything pretty well and won't cost much. The only way he won't be in the NBA next season is if he chooses not to (which could happen)

Just for reference Landale's stats in Houston this season

=41 games, 3 starts
=12 minutes a night
=4.6ppg, 3.3rpg, 0.9apg, 0.3spg, 0.2bpg
=Shooting clips of 51% from the field, 40% from 3 and 67% from the line

His scoring and shooting percentages have been on the decline for a few years, but this was his best season from down town and he was right on par with his career average in boards

Is he a net positive because he was on a good team so played garbage time when the game was over?

Reply #966725 | Report this post

No he's a net positive because the team performs as well with him on the floor as it does with him off.

He's a very solid backup big. At WORST he's a third string Centre on a good team.

Could see him landing almost anywhere.

Cavs trade for Lonzo ball from the bulls in exchange for Isaac Okoro. Clears a guard spot at the bulls which makes it clearer that they're gonna pay for Giddey.

I think for the Cavs it means they're not willing to pay overs for Ty Jerome who was pretty average in the playoffs. Might help Proctor to stick with him theoretically competing with Okoro for the defensive wing minutes.

Fair enough, just looked up landales plus minus on AI and this is what it said.

Jock Landale Plus/Minus Overview

In his rookie season (2021-22), Landale recorded a plus/minus of -17.

Career Plus/Minus Insights

Across his career, Landale's plus/minus has generally been negative, indicating his teams have been outscored while he is on the court.

In terms of game-by-game impact, Landale has posted a positive plus/minus in 40.5% of his games.

Landale's box plus/minus (which adjusts for a player's impact compared to league average) and he's a 0.4 which puts him above league average (albeit in non qualifying minutes). This puts him on par with the likes of Myles Turner.

He's basically an average NBA back up centre. He's going to be fine.

Oh, I thought you said his team performs as well with him on the court as it does with him off. That's not the case, even compared with other backup centres.
And on par with Myles Turner, bit of research revealed this:

Myles Turner's plus-minus for the 2024-25 NBA season was +202. This represents the total point differential when he was on the court across all games in the season. Additionally, his average plus-minus per game was approximately +2.0.

Further advanced stats show:

He had a positive plus-minus in 61% of his games played.

The Pacers were +3.3 points per 100 possessions better with Turner on the court compared to when he was off.

These figures highlight Turner's positive impact on the Indiana Pacers' performance during the 2024-25 season.

I was using BPM not raw plus minus but fine he's trash and will be lucky to get a game on Monday night social league. Happy?

Travers and Armstrong both have qualifying offers for 2-ways so if they want they'll at least be able to do that again next season. Figure that's more likely for Armstrong but Travers might be a chance at a full-time gig.

So apparently Landale and the Rockets agreed to push the team option out to July 7th, which might facilitate them using him in a coming move.

Kelly Iko reporting that the DFS signing with the Rockets might be turned into a sign-and-trade. This would benefit both the Rockets but keeping their MLE available and giving them more flexibility with the deal, and the Lakers by getting something back in return. I've seen a couple of reports that Landale might be involved in that which would give the Lakers a back up big and also a tradable contract if they need to later in the year.

I'm not saying Landale is terrible, just that your statement that Houston performs as well with him the floor as it does with him off when facts shows that's incorrect.
He just needs to be in the right situation like he was in Phoenix which led to his rocket's deal, hopefully Memphis can prove the same.

Yeah and what I'm saying is the stats show that when when placed on an average team he's an average performer. Basically removing all of the noise related to who he plays for he's better than half the league.

Reflects well on Australian basketball when Boomers keep getting signed on for leadership/culture moreso than what they bring on the court

Apart from his Spurs stint, haven't his team's been pretty good apart from Houston finding their feet when he first go there.
And I strongly doubt he's better than half the league, so much bias because he's an Aussie. He comes in, works hard, competes and isn't a distraction. Exactly the reason why Ingles got another contract and why you're spruiking for Patty to get a deal.
He's a backups backup. Not better than half the NBA nor does his team do better when he's on court than on the bench. He's literally the poor man's Jay Huff.

Landale's advanced stats all show he's at worst an average NBA player. The limitation is the minutes, for sure. He was a situational rotation player which pretty much all backup bigs are these days. But VORP, WS/48, BPM, PER/48 etc all show that he's at least league average and in most cases better.

He'll get a chance to play early in the season for the Grizz and maybe even start with Edey and JJJ out to start the season and should then settle back into a similar situational rotation role once they're back.

He was a free agent for about 24 hours before finding a deal, which I think shows he had plenty of teams who valued what he brings

He's a third string centre for a reason and I dare say injuries and most bigs already snapped up is why the Grizzlies went to him. Good luck to him but I think this might be his last season in the NBA.

I underestimated Landale's team defense, he rotates well, gets in the way and doesn't make many mistakes. that's what got him another contract. A safe, ready to plug in big on the bench.

the younger more athletic bigs often take a little while to adjust to all the specific rotations and positioning they need to be in.

He was tipped to be waived a long time before he actually was so I don't think the negotiations took place the minute he was released.
Apart from his breakout games for Phoenix when the needed any big because Dominayton quit on his team, he hasn't shown much.
But let's move the goal posts again, from his team being better with him on court versus on the bench (Udoka mustn't have seen those stats), to being better than half the NBA, to now being average, then Memphis frantically outbidding "plenty" of teams to sign him for a one year minimum
He's 29, if he can't get minutes at Memphis then he's done in the NBA, despite his Vorp numbers.

He was tipped to be waived because the contract he signed was specifically set up to give Houston flexibility. He got a better than market deal and took advantage of that but it was almost certainly never going to go the full four years.

Now he's on a lower than market deal. It happens. I've no doubt he'll get a multi year deal after this season at around half the mid level rate.

Again, being average is still a bench player. There's 18 players per team, so being better than half the league puts you firmly in the situational role player category.

But continue to go off. I look forward to this discussion again next off season

Ducas signing with Brisbane is interesting, must have decided he isnt getting much of an NBA shot any time soon. Cant help but think Travers and Armstrong will eventually do the same. 2-way deals often dont lead to much.

Moving goal posts again, how he was signed within 24 hours of being waived suggesting he was hot property to, oh yes, everyone knew he'd be on the market.
He cashed in on his success in Phoenix, found himself on a good team and struggled (although somehow the team was better when he was on the court than off, dickriding comment there).
Now he's signed for just one year. If he's as good as you somehow think, wouldn't a team try and lock him up for a multi year contract, or are they like every other team and not sure if he'll even last the season.
If he wasn't an Aussie you wouldn't give a shit and pump him up.

It will be interesting to watch Harrison. He seems like one of those guys who needs the confidence to feel like he belongs at that level. But if he feels he can compete he can probably do it at a high level.

He's also sets very good screens which the nba value

Hope he goes well but the bullets deserve to have him again this season cos they've been pretty patient with his development

What's fascinating with the Harrison situation is his playing time this early in Summer League. If he's playing alongside two-way and back-of-bench NBA players and contributing alongside them, then surely he's also at that level? Denver has a spare two-way.

Naw, someones doing a lot of research to try and justify themselves.
Will just have to wait till Landale is either cut or not resigned. Can use all your advanced metrics, but apart from a patch in Phoenix where they wanted anyone but Ayton, he's achieved pretty well nothing.
If he can't stick in Memphis with all their injuries you're going to look pretty stupid. But maybe he can make them better with him being on the court rather than on the bench like in Houston, that statement in itself is one of the dumber things written on here and that includes Herman.
GFY, that's mature.

Olbrich with another start today, meaning he has started every game. Whilst he has posted solid albeit modest numbers, he has looked big and bouncy and not out of place. He has been assigned the post big, has been banging ok and has been rim running very well.

Toohey and Armstrong have also started all of their games whilst Armstrong did not suit for the last Warriors game. Toohey has been assigned the stretch big, and clearly has the confidence of the Warriors coaching staff, but has only looked the total goods in that one game against the Jazz. ESPN have listed both in the depth chart of the 15 for the Warriors, but for mine only Taran looks safely in the 15 for this season at this stage...
Though who knows what might happen with their numbers if the Warriors rumoured entry into the trade market happens...
