Over/under on how many 'Tassie Tyger' jokes the NBL media team make across the season?

Think it was Olgun the other day who said it is very rare for a NBL team to have imports 1 through 3. Tyger has a reputation of being a terrier on D which with his speed might mean he can guard the likes of PJC, BC, KD etc. That would be a massive bonus even with just adequate ball carrying and distribution. Looks much better than that though and has some JC like circus tricks to boot. There is also more trust having already played FIBA in Germany.

The opposition is going to have to heavily guard Hamilton and that is going to leave a lot of space for Tyger and DJ and all the perimeter shooting on this roster.

Will be a very interesting watch when we see them all on the Court for the first time at Ulverstone or the Blitz.

Kobe Williamson is going to be a huge watch for exactly that reason. Roth has already declared Bannan is plan B and Williamson is expected to play minutes at the 5 but if Magnay and Bannan were both to go down then shudder the thought.

Very interesting SEN Tassie segment with Darren Smith this morning.

A lot of questions put about the McVeigh situation.

Interestingly, the JJs did not know he was going to sign with Cairns when the release was granted and Darren wouldn't elaborate but there are now some conversations perhaps with the NBL and Cairns around the issues that obviously are there when this type of things happen.

Sounds like the JJs thought he was signing in the NBA, Europe or Japan etc.

Also said there were conversations with the coaches and Jack about how he might have reintegrated into this years roster and that the JJs had the spend to accommodate him on his existing contract.

All water under the bridge now but just interesting for us fans.

Obviously his Tassie contract wasn't in the same financial ball park as the 2yr/2M deal from Cairns.

I'm surprised they released him to go to another nbl team or they just didn’t think an other nbl team would front up with that sort money. I’m looking forward to JJs v taipans clashes as Roth will know McVeighs weaknesses and will try to exploit them. Bannon v McVeigh should be a beauty.

Of course they released him, the bad PR otherwise would've hindered the JJ's chances of getting good future FA's. Just like Sydney "had" to do with Vasiljevic too.

From what Darren said, the JJs were completely blind to him intending to sign with another NBL team.

That seems odd, because they knew they held right of refusal for him in the NBL, but he already had a FIBA clearance when he left for the NBA.

That's just spin by Smith. The JJ's only held his NBL rights which needed to be revoked to allow him to sign with another NBL team. They may not have known that team was going to be Cairns but obviously they knew it was going to be another NBL team.

Under some very probing questioning by Alistair Lynch.

NB: We can't complain that SEN Tassie just ask Dorothy Dixers any more. Lynchy is very direct and not afraid to ask uncomfortable questions.

Were the JJs incentivised ($$?) in some way to relent and release him in the end? Smith seemed to lean into not answering a few questions in that space citing confidentiality.

I think its pretty clear the JJs haven't exactly sent him off with their genuine blessing here.

AAA, it does seem curious that the weakest team over a long period has somehow managed to snag one of the best players around, albeit for a huge bit of coin for the league, when they couldn't afford anything like him for the last few seasons.

The kind of thing LK has been suspected of in the past?

hoopie, any ideas why, "when they couldn't afford anything like him for the last few seasons."

Do you think that private ownership/money might have something to do with it? Me too!

I'm a passionate JJs supporter and believe it is time to move on and spend more time discussing Tyger Campbell, DAvid Johnson and Bryce Hamilton who are coming as imports in the Point Guard, shooting guard and small forward (2/3) spots.

First time a team has had these spots as imports that I know of.

Wish Jack McVeigh all the best - combination of opportunity provided by the JJs and Roth and damn hard work and talent has him where he is now.

The new owners of the JJs and the JJs have emphasised that they have not tightened the purse strings. The opposite ie recruiting Bannon, Marshall etc and retaining Magnay along with the highest level imports the club has ever had does demonstrate this.

Smith made a point of saying it was a case of timing ie Jack pursuing the NBA up until very recently meant the JJs had to lock in a roster based on him most likely not coming back. There would have been an element of not being able to afford the reported contract he has received at Cairns but this is most likely a result of being committed to a different roster.

I'm looking forward to watching this roster and believe they are the most talented and deepest JJs have put together. Yep there will be commentary on Magnay staying on the floor but other teams will also face this with their players throughout the season.

Bring it on.

Roth on the "departure" of McVeigh:

"Jack has earned the right ... we got a nice buyout from Jack to say goodbye and thank you."

Interesting.

Agree Zodiac, very interesting.

Roth said his contract had to be bought out and that the JJs have received the payment. No idea how much that might be but Roth called it a "nice" sum. Others on here might know how buyout clauses work with NBL contracts and how much of the unexpired contract price that might be. Roth was asked at the Presser but understandably said it was not something the club would disclose.

Regardless, I thought the recruiting club ordinarily pays the buyout. If that was the case here then McVeigh presumably has been an even bigger spend for Cairns than advertised. Although Roth seemed to say that McVeigh paid it himself.

Sounded like he was talking about the buyout when he went to the NBA?

Marry this up with the recent interview with Darren Smith on SEN Tassie - plus, buyouts aren't required for NBA two-ways - and this buyout was definitely connected to the Cairns move.

Roth said a few other interesting things including that the JJs did offer Reyne Smith a full contract earlier in free agency so Baller was right about that. Also, that the owners didn't hesitate in approving the spend to go and recruit the replacement for MacDonald. Tyger Campbell was the first called and terms were agreed in a couple of hours. Was very close to being recruited in 2023 but JJs went with JC. Also, sounds like MacDonald is definitely going to be recontracted. He has been told to keep the keys as the team is his to drive in NBL 2027.

They signed Campbell as an injury replacement player and not as a straight third import which implies they probably expect Macdonald to play at some point later in the season.

Maybe he did a quick bit of consultancy work or did some good investments in the off season in Hobart to afford this so called buyout.

Or let's imagine his JJs contract was $600k for example. He pays them $100k himself personally and then signs for a million with Cairns, so he makes an extra $300k per year if my maths is correct (no idea what his original contract was worth or how much he's personally paying), Cairns pay nothing, Tassie get something for nothing and McVeigh gets a nice chunk of extra cash.
Cairns might have some extra cash to spend but doubt they'd add a buyout fee on top of an already big deal.
Pure speculation on my part but seems to make sense.

JJs may have opened their purse strings somewhat but they haven't ended up with a very balanced or deep roster

Surely bannan isn't on much

It'll be interesting to watch but the league is heavy in strong bigs this season and most will be trying to exploit the lack of depth behind magnay
