SEM Phoenix sign John Brown III

He won't give you much on offense but if anyone's seen him play defense its a sight to behold. He literally give you everything on D, which is what King wants.

Seems like SEM is all in as Foxwell as their starting point.

SEM are all-in with Foxwell and Sobey- other than them, very thin on ball handling and creation.

If those two stay healthy, Foxwell takes the next step and Sobey has a good year, SEM could be a smoky.

Kind of the opposite of United, who have a deep back-court but thinner in the frontcourt.

Probably not the direction I would've gone, but it's hard to cover every base perfectly, and SEM could be very good if those two bring their best.

And this will be somewhat a futuristic team, relatively position-less.

Their 3 imports all appear to be versatile guys who can provide multiple things.

SEM continuing to do SEM things. The decision to sign a SG in Maldonado to be a big PG after losing their original big PG says it all.

Good signing, probably could play a bit five, agree SEM are smokies. Foxwell will be great and Sobey under this King is different player.

Maldonado did average 4 assists a game in NCAA, including one season with 6.3 per game (which was 0.1 per game short of leading the Mountain West conference), so clearly he has creative ability.

And the Belgian is 6'10 and does everything with a nice jump-shot to boot.

SEM should be fun to watch.

King is from the European school of thought re coaching, you win games defensively first, similar to a few very successful coaches in the nbl. Vickerman, Gorgian, Roth. We will see what the rest of the coaches bring, probably add Tatum to that list.

Brown is a very good signing. Their ability to defend ball-screens just went through the roof.

This guy makes Justin Simon look like a weak defender. Great to see him in the league. However, still unsure about SEM balance

A defensive minded team with guys who seem like they'll all buy into a gritty culture.

NBL22 Jackies anyone?

Moller is training with SEM (or was) so imagine SEM's D if he was signed.

Defence is definitely the flavour of the NBL but does SEM have enough offence to be in front on the score-board. A team needs to be able to defend a leading score-line, not a losing one.

Apart from Sobes, can SEM count on any other decent-to-good scorer, week in, week out?

Not saying they can't. Asking if they can.

Imo SEM can score, it'll be defend and run, get easy buckets. Maldonado, Sobey are scorers, after JJs looking very solid to me.
PW, SEM are full so can’t see Moller playing there. He’d certainly be a King type player.

It's kinda funny because it's the complete opposite of last year

They had Hurt and Wieskamp who looked like gun scorers, Walton Jr who had been an NBL assists leader and title winner, plus Sobey.

I remember Pete Hooley (in the pre-season) predicting they'd be top 4 purely because no one would be able to stop them

But pretty quickly it was obvious they had major defensive deficiencies

This year they've got a defensive minded coach, they've brought in "Euroleague Draymond Green" and a bunch of tall, long, versatile types who play good defense, and people are wondering how they'll score points

Maldondo played six seasons at college for the one team. Not many people can say that.
