vjbl changes in 2026

Sent out by my kids' club today ... not seen it mentioned elsewhere.

Link

Interested to know what people more learned and steeped in the history of this comp think. In summary, for U12 what was VJBL 6-13, and for U14 from VJL 9-13, is now rebranded into a regional league.

Not sure if much different and just a rebrand?

I wonder how much the 'status' of playing in a 'Victorian Junior' rather than 'Regional' league will affect people, and whether that will affect how clubs try and position their teams too?

And that Gippsland/Peninsula geographical group looks mighty big too. Not sure I'd be super pleased if I was living in Dromana to have my kid in a regional team needing to head to Warragul or Korumburra for a Regional League game on a Friday night.

A long time coming and finally BV are committing to this after some movement towards this in the past.

*the regions are designed as a guide not set in stone. The attempt to reduce maximum travel by 40kms may not seem a lot but its progress. The VJBL is too big not sustainable and lost its purpose.

So many State Associations hid behind their clubs and refuse to openly share this information directly with the public which is disappointing. Thanks for sharing.

Great to see!

When I was coaching 10+ years ago it was Set up like this. VC, VJL 1-4 and then regional. It was split demographically it was great for those lower end teams. I was at Whittlesea and we played Keilor, Werribee, coburg, Eltham, Altona etc.

While it doesn't affect me now as I live and coach in Bendigo. Every week is a hike Haha

Personally, I think its a good thing and long overdue. The travel is limited, or at least attempted to be limited to 2hrs, that hasnt changed. VJBL / VC has been that way for many years and if in excess of this range limit, they try to find a halfway point for the game.
The dilution of talented match ups over recent years has been mind blowing, hopefully this will bring about some stability in Friday night games and increase back into domestic games mid week.

From Basketball Victoria:

New - Regional League (RL) Competition
After the completion of the 2025 RDL competition, the VJBL Administration met with the associations involved to discuss the format of the competition moving forward.
In addition to this meeting, at the 2025 ACM, the VJBL delegates discussed the competition format of all VJL competitions and the ability to reduce travel where possible.
Following these two discussions the VJBL Administration have reviewed the team numbers in the Under 12 and Under 14, VJL and RDL Competitions and have made the decision to rename the RDL competition to Regional League.
The Regional League competition will now sit beneath the VC and VJL competitions as a three tier competition.

Regional League Entry
All VJBL teams that enter the 2025/26 Grading season, could fall back into the Regional League competition based on performances during grading.
However, if you wish to just enter RL, you can enter your teams to start in Grading Phase Two.

New - VJBL Competition Formats

Under 12 - Boys and Girls
Teams will now grade for the following competitions
• Victorian Championship (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 1-4 (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 5 (3 pools of 10 teams)
• Regional League (Remainder of teams, separated into geographical pools)

Under 14 - Boys and Girls
Teams will now grade for the following competitions
• Victorian Championship (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 1-3 (1 pool of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 4 (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 5-8 (3 pools of 10 teams)
• Regional League (Remainder of teams, separated into geographical pools)

Under 16 - Boys and Girls
Teams will now grade for the following competitions
• Victorian Championship (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 1-3 (1 pool of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 4 (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 5 and below (3 pools of 10 teams)

Under 18 - Boys and Girls
Teams will now grade for the following competitions
• Victorian Championship (2 pools of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 1-4 (1 pool of 10 teams)
• Victorian Junior League 5 and below (3 pools of 10 teams)

August 2025 New - VJBL Travel requirements
The unanimous decision was to limit travel according to the level of competition that teams were playing. Therefore, we have adjusted the max travel numbers as per the table below, as we believe our elite competitions should still be required to travel to the 210km limit.

VC VJL1 VJL2 VJL3 VJL4 VJL5 RDL
UNDER 12 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 170 KMS 170 KMS 170 KMS 170 KMS
VC VJL1 VJL2 VJL3 VJL4 VJL5-8 RDL
UNDER 14 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 170 KMS 170 KMS
VC VJL1 VJL2 VJL3 VJL4 VJL5-10
UNDER 16-18 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 210 KMS 170 KMS

Geographical Pools – Regional League
We have given a basic breakdown of how the RL competitions may be broken down, but this is a guide and not set in stone.
If your association grouping, is touching another group, or has an arrow pointing to a diZerent group, there is a possibility your teams may play.

I feel it should be a bit more aligned with amount of what gender playing -

i.e. boys divisions number nearly twice as many as girls yet they make the cut off the same for both.

I appreciate it is easier to manage / cap with an across the board decision.

It's not rational, in any sense, to have kids below VC driving up to 210 kms on a Friday night. It’s the deal, but it’s not a deal that is in the best interests of kids or families. The need to be more bold, and take the regional approach further. There are plenty of opportunities for country kids and outer regional kids to play, including tournaments. It’s just silly.
