Bryce Cotton attains Australian Citizenship

He's now a local. Adelaide are free to sign another import.

Hate you 36ers but you got it done. Congrats.

Cats fans excited about Jones - Bryce says hold my beer.

Congrats Bryce, it's been a journey that has lasted far longer and had far more hurdles than it should've, but pleased for him and the Cotton family.

Wonder how this changes Adelaide's money situation around for this season, he must now be the marquee?

Boomers play WC2027 qualifiers against NZ 28 Nov and 1 Dec, so it could happen soon if Bryce changes his mind about suiting up the Green and Gold.

I never got the impression that he didn't want to suit up in the green & gold, just that the citizenship process was such a monumental debacle that he thought f*** it, it's too hard.

Add him to the squad - now!

His mind on the Boomers may change. He would walk into the Boomers B team, but I am not sure about A team, unless his ability to create his own shot is prized above his defensive liabilities. It might just be that the team needs it enough to warrant his selection.

Per Olgun: "Cotton personally hired Ricky Bustos of WPM Lawyers -- a firm that has expertise in workplace migration law -- to guide his citizenship process. This was a Cotton-hired firm - not an NBL team, the league, or BA - that reached this outcome; noting for the sake of transparency."

WPM have offices in Melbourne and Hobart - surely we could have engaged them from Perth as well? All a bit perplexing as to what was going down in Perth.

Anyways, sad that he couldn't get it done with us but there would be many Cats fans personally happy for Bryce and his family.

I mean he said "nah, I'm all good" when asked about it - but yes, that doesn't mean forever.

He would definitely be named in the WC qualifier games if he made himself available.

Yeah I can't remember exactly when but Bryce was asked by Jo Healy in an interview "if you became a citizen in the near future, would you want to play (for the Boomers" and he basically straight up said no.

That could absolutely change now, just what he last said on the topic.

Adelaide can sign a 3rd import now. Scary. Olgun reporting that they likely will wait to mid-season to assess what (or if) they need in a signing.

I think the moral of the story is congrats to Bryce! The end to an incredibly stupid and frustrating saga, great to see him finally become part of our nation.

Adelaide will defintely sign another import at some stage. Such a luxury. Plus the injury to Gritsci is not as serious as first feared but also more serious than they originally thought. He will be out for a while and I doubt they'd rush him back from that kind of incident so a spot is there.

If adelaide sign another import - which is a totally bonkers scenario - they'll have to take DJ or Humphries off marquee status and eat their salary against the cap. Can only have a combo of four players on marquee and import (most commonly 3 import, 1 marquee). In my opinion, a third import needs to be better than DJ or Humphries to justify doing that. The kind of player won't be cheap.

A third import is more likely to be kept as insurance against injury during the season. Either way, I can't wait to see the Adelaide team spend at the end of the season. It's championship or bust, and I've seen too many teams stacked with superstars underperform.

And now was about the earliest Cotton could get citizenship after the five year ban due to the visa stuff up, so this would've happened in Perth if he was still there.

Brisbane Bullets 2007 team didn't.

Bryce being marquee will save a LOT of salarycap tax. If they wanted, they could use the tax saved on another midseason import without increasing their actual spend (including tax) compared to what they were committed to spend before Bryce naturalising.

Big win for Bryce and the club, plus he can likely now play until he's much older as a local aswell

Regarding the boomers, can Matisse and Bryce both play?

Putting basketball aside, congratulations to Bryce and his family on this finally being behind them. He seems like a great guy and is certainly settled in Australia with his family, so deserves it

36ers at a distinct disadvantage now having only 2 imports to start the season with. Behind the 8 ball from the start!

Happy for BC, but what a disaster for Perth fans, and even bigger fumble. As others have said, one assumes DJ would need to come of marquee for another import, not aure how feasible it is money wise, but if they are willing to pay, its a huge advantage...

Perth could have had BC, Windler, Doo and a long defensive import pg.... oh and JLa possibly...

I think BC's frustration with BA also came from them withdrawing their support for him and been part of his citizenship push when they moved to Matisse.... had that support remained he may have had citizenship despite the administrative bs.

In Olgun's article he said being able to marquee Cotton's contract will save the Sixers $400k+ in luxury tax payments, you can get a pretty good import for that price.

Yet despite this SEG thought they were holding all the cards during contract negotiations. What utter morons.

I had doubts about Adelaide, but this allows them to address any deficiencies with a carefully selected mid-season import.

Huge for 36ers.

Potentially a Boomers role but it's 2 years till WC.

All the whoo ha about sixers. It's a brilliant start to season and organic growth is being rewardeed. Promises of better things to come were alluded too last season and now it's blooming roses or cotton. So sweet.

Mason Jones is elite. However, it's never certain what attitude a player arrives with and how they transition to the NBL. On paper, he could surpass Cotton. But I don't think he's got Cotton's IQ and hunger.

Beyond the benefits for the Sixers and/or Boomers, it's just good to finally see justice done for Bryce, who has been nothing but a class act in his time in Australia. It shouldnt have taken this long for him to get citizenship. There are certainly people who give a lot less to the community who find it a lot easier. A good bloke to adopt as one of our own. Hopefully he does open his mind to the Boomers again because he can certainly help the program, be it in the B team, or keeping guys honest in the training squad, or maybe just maybe making the full squad.

Thinking more about Cotton and the Boomers, my real question is can anyone else we have do what he does well enough?

We dont have anyone we can throw the ball to and say "get us a bucket". And while there may be better players in the mix, they all lack what he has. And the team has got great defenders, great point guards, great forwards. But with Patty being basically done with, we dont have a world class scorer. Cotton may not be a great defender but he can get buckets anywhere. Maybe we need to let him do that.

Way I see it, Cotton could be fighting for positions with someone like Josh Green who is a better athlete and defender, but hasnt got a real scorers mentality. Tyrese Proctor could also be an option but we're yet to see him as a pro.

I could see a world where Cotton is in your 8-9 man rotation helping to tick the scoreboard along.

Imagine Cotton AND Mills in the Boomers at the same time. And on court, at the same time as the PG and the SG? (Wear them both out in their first game then play the rest of the series without either/both!).

Actually, this Cotton bloke could be upsetting the fairly settled Boomers. Since his availability, it's either him and Mills (barring the above happening) or him and Thybulle!

If it is Cotton, then that will exclude Thybulle (FIBA) and certainly Mills too (Common Sense). No way do they choose Cotton and Mills. (Mills and Thybulle can, of course, both be selected to the same team).

[The above is just for fun. PLEASE...NO-ONE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!]

Really happy for Cotton.

I definitely think, if he's willing, he should be around every Boomers squad for the next few years.

The delays he experienced were always around the chosen path having a very distinct advantage which came with very distinct requirements which were a much higher threshold. It was a high risk high reward path that ultimately failed.

It's clear he got bad advice, but even with the setbacks, his citizenship ended up being in a pretty standard timeframe for the non priority group
