NRP's in the NBL

Noticed, for the first time, that several teams are now including NRP's (Nominated Replacement Player's) in their rosters.

Not at all sure, how this works. My obvious query is what if a guard, say Sam McDaniel, gets injured and your NRP is Cam Dalton, a centre. Will Dalton have to replace McDaniel? I know that won't happen, but what does happen with an NRP?

In the past, the club would look for a suitable replacement and carry on.

Googling, did not help. Can you?

btw RodT the guys said on Overtime that Lamar Patterson is still an import at the moment so he's been signed as an import IRP like Todd Withers was with Perth last season, he can only play if replacing an unavailable import. Dalton is the IRP for local players. The whole thing is a bit of a wank they're just essentially extra players who can replace someone else on the roster for whatever "injury".

As far as I'm aware, the NRP players this season are:

Adelaide - Blake Jones
Brisbane - Callum Dalton + Lamar Patterson for imports
Illawarra - Harry Froling
Melbourne - Nicolas Tata

Oh my now this is becoming a joke Illawarra have signed a second NRP player now in Jonah Antonio. I suppose you could argue Harry is busy replacing Sam so Antonio's been signed as cover for everyone else but when have teams been allowed to have 2 x NRP's for local players?

What's the point of having DP's then? And Illawarra have four of them too and they're being passed over not just by these two players but the signing the other day of Bayles as well.

The Harry Froling signing confirming him as an injury replacement signing:

Zodiac, does that mean that if my eg above happened, Bullets would have to replace McDaniel with Dalton? Can't see that as being the rule.

As you said, just another way of getting more players into the system or to keep certain players out of the market (even for replacement players).

Is it time to just have 12-15 man rosters? If these guys are coming in ahead of DP players, then why aren't they just in the league in the first place.

Is it still a bit amateur like to have DPs who in some cases are effectively volunteers?

I can understand the original premise of DP's they were young guys 24 and under who were on a part-time wage and could only play in home games or in away games if replacing an unavailable rostered player. As I understand it that last bit no longer applys but still part-time wage and 24 and under.

DP's also needed to be part-time to keep potential college eligibility open which is now no longer an issue either. The 11 players on the roster thing does seem to be a bit of an anachronism these days with all these NRP players being added to teams especially multiple ones.

I also don't like teams being able to hoard imports like the Bullets with Patterson or Wildcats with Withers last season, the rule is max three imports not four. I remember Melbourne United started that maybe 4-5 years ago when they had four imports one season and would rotate them in and out as needed.

If a player comes in to replace an injured player they have to come in for 4 games or 3 weeks (which ever comes first). And then they can't come in for that player again if said player gets injured again.

Unless they are nominated injury replacement player. They can’t come in for one game and not needing the mandatory 4. And they can come in anytime and for anyone. Each team is allocated 4.

Just seen the hawks signed Jonah Antonio as an IRP. Unsure why? 28yo and for a supposed "sharp shooter" has hit 30% on 3pfg 2 out of the last 3 seasons! There must be others out there worth a shot as end of bench pieces? May as well throw Lachie Barker a lifeline, he has at least shot 35% and 40% in 2 of his last three seasons from 3pt range and been around a team of champions. Or go young and have a crack at a Kye Savage type, had a decent NBL1 season, only 20yo plus is a decent outside shooter and could develop over the next few years. Could even DP him and elevate to IRP when needed, if allowed?

Is that a ruling, AN1234? If so, it's beginning to make some sense. Not necessarily likeable, but understand why it's there. Thanks.
