Phoenix v Pelicans , Sun Ch 10

Can this game be as good as the MU game? Why not?

On paper, SEM doesn't look as powerful/strong as MU did, but then again, MU didn't look all that strong, on paper, either.

Let's hope the event finishes on a high. It deserves to!

Me again. NBL shows game-time as 2 pm and it is. Telecast on 10 starts at 1 pm. Must be a pre-show. Good!

Jordan Hunter's going to get killed. Honestly this one has the potential to be real ugly.

RobT, it's daylight savings now so I assume in Queensland it’s 1pm for you, but 2pm for Melbourne, Sydney, Tassie.

No pre-game, but yes half an hour earlier because of the 48 minute game

Picking SEM to play this game was a bad choice by the league. Would have liked Adelaide.

Nice work by the NBL app boxscore which apparently thinks Gorjok Gak is the only SEM player

Sobey should have King as a coach years ago, changed his attitude, best for SEM. Pelicans looking better than the other night, more serious. Hunter has been good, plus one while on the floor, nice to see Aliir back. SEM not that good off the bench imo, a few ok though. Good to hear Garnett talk, said today's team don’t play D like the old days.

Phoenix really hurt by their shooting. This should really be a 10-15 point game at this point. If you look away from the scoreboard the team doesn't look 'bad' competing against them its just you can see, just like with Melbourne, they have to make a lot of adjustments to just play their game.

I'm liking the head to head battle going on between Sobey and Saddiq Bey. I like the look of Bey he looks quite decent.

shame that the game sounds like a nightclub, NBA games are not like that. Crowd can't get involved with the game when there is constant music.

Its turning into a training drill and you can see SEM are tired now. Games like this just show how limited we are as far as scorers in our league. The only guy to get anything going is Sobey.

Starting to get ugly now. To big, to fast, to athletic. Has been an excellent concept. Larry has his detractors but he's been a marvel for basketball in this country.

Yeah, makes you start wondering though whether these games are good for the league or not. I mean, if we keep doing them yearly will we get better at playing NBA teams or will we keep getting pantsed like this? Is the exposure enough to make it worth it for the league? Or does SEM getting smacked by a low ranked NBA team do too much damage?

Logically we will get better and the gap will decrease. I saw that at the 1992 Olympics the USA annihilated every country they played, and that dominance continued until the 2000 Olympics when the USA only just beat Lithuania and then finished 6th at the 2002 WC.

Unfortunately SEM were never going to be competitive with no real offence weaponry outside of Sobey.

If the NBL wants to keep doing these games they need to be more selective about who they choose to play them. An unathletic, or offensively limited team may be okay in the NBL but wont compete against an NBA team in any meaningful way. The recipe for success against NBA teams (or being competitive) is really quite simple - and it almost reads like the recipe of being a good basketball team when not specifically applied to the NBL -

Athleticism -
Height -
Shooting.

Adelaide 36ers had it when they managed to beat the Suns. Melbourne had it when they took OKC close. I recall NZ with RJ Hampton and Sydney with Bogut playing some NBA teams close. If you have one or two seven footers that can absorb some contact, you can negate some of the NBA athleticism. if you have athleticism yourself, you can look at not getting blocked. If you have a player just as effective as a Chris Goulding or a Bryce Cotton, you give an NBA team someone to think about. All these elements have been in play when an NBA team has taken an NBA team close - SEM have none of them. Melbourne without Goulding were incredibly lucky to stay around.

Adelaide would have been a better pick - all it takes is 3-4 guys who wouldnt embarrass themselves in the NBA to have a competitive game. Cotton - DJ - Cheatham - Humphries - even Rakocevic and Cameron (sure not NBA level but have some attributes that make them competitive). SEM only really had Sobey.

Hunter was very good, top scored for SEM and had the best plus minus, Sobey, Brown and Aliir did well too. Entertaining game just watching the talent from the pelicans.

Hapoel Jerusalem played an NBA team this morning and lost by 35pts as well. It's not unique to the NBL.

One positive for SEM I guess is that Maldonado looked every bit as competent against NBA defenses as he has NBL...

Fun game to watch anyway - more than I expected, because New Orleans actually played with a good level of intensity up through the 3rd Q.

What the hell is going on with the NBL's official box score?

Top scorer for SEM a SF called Yovel Zoosman? Saddiq Bey not listed as having played despite being one of the Pels top scorers?

pre season games, pre season tech support. I saw on the NBA app Doyle was on the box score twice in game 1. One with all of his actual stats and another with zero minutes and no stats. He was listed as a starter in both so 6 starters haha
