what if a player falls backwards over the ball - very uncomfortably ends up with ball caught underneath them - facing the ceiling (mid back) and opponent reaches under and grabs the ball - the player stuck on the ball was trying to get off - but due to being bent backwards has difficulty.
refs called a held ball - fair enough - but some were screaming for a violation ???
comes down to control. If the player on the ground had control of the ball, it may have been a travel (if he/she moved along the ground and gained some advantage in doing so).
If they didn't move over the ball, but was on the ball, and was deemed to have had control, and another player grabs the ball also, jump ball.
If they didn't have control of the ball, play on until they either gain control and make a move, or another player takes the ball.

Because people who have no idea what the rules are, think they do and will bitch and yell when the ref doesn't agree with them.

it was a rebound, fumble ball feel to ground and about 4 players dominoed (?spelling) each other (no need for a foul, they all tripped over each other)
I felt held ball was correct - there was no rolling or sliding by the player over the top - just some physio style back breaking bends!

I am a level A2 official with experience at senior level. Because the situation is so rare there is no real rule that covers this exact situation. However, calling a travel would be wrong as the player that has the ball stuck between his body and the floor has no control. To be deemed a travel, you must have control of the ball. In the FIBA articles it states having the ball land on your body does not deem the player to be in control. I think the umpires decision of jump ball is fair and a common sense outcome.

Is there such thing as Level A2 these days?
You cannot penalise the guy who did nothing wrong. Therefore it can't be a travel!
Jump ball does one thing - it interupts the situation stops further domino effects then lets the game continue from a pass in.
Is this unfair? Not really, it is preventative of someone getting hurt or the situation escalating in to a push and shove.
Rules some times are only guides in certain moments in a game - common sense really should always win over being technically correct.
Very well done to the referee who called a held ball situation and continued play with the alternating posession arrow.

PS: I do hope the player that did the back bends over the ball ended up not being hurt in anyway.
